EXPERIENCING THE APPLE iPAD By Courtney Rébért A Research Paper Submitted to ERAU-Worldwide In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement of the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Worldwide Fort Campbell Campus April 2012 EXPERIENCING THE APPLE iPAD The traditional PC that once dominated the computer industry is gradually being replaced by the fast growing tablet computer or tablet as they are most commonly known. A tablet computer, or a tablet, is a mobile computer, larger than a mobile phone or personal digital assistant, integrated into a flat touch screen and primarily operated by touching the screen rather than using a physical keyboard. It often uses an onscreen virtual keyboard, a passive stylus pen, or a digital pen. The term tablet was made popular as a concept presented by Microsoft in 2000 and 2001, and is referred to any tablet-sized computer regardless of the operating system. A significant trait of tablets not based on the traditional PC architecture is that the main source of third party software for these devices tends to be through online distribution, rather than more traditional methods of boxed software or direct sales from software vendors. These sources known as “app stores”, provide centralized catalogues of software from both first and third parties, and allow simple “one click” on device purchasing, installation, and updates (Wikipedia.org). Other characteristics are tablet shape and size, wireless connection to local area networks, and the operating systems that they are powered by. Two of the operating systems used in the tablet industry are, the Apple iPad iOS (i-Operating System) used by Apple – the biggest and most successful company in the tablet industry, and Google’s Android Operating System used by two of Apple iPad’s closest competitors, the
