Caribbean civilization existed long before the arrival of the Europeans. As defined by word net web, civilization is defined as a particular society at a particular time and place. Prior to the arrival of Columbus in the Caribbean many different civilizations existed. These included the Paleo- Indians, Meso – Indians and Neo- Indian civilizations. These groups used various survival techniques and seemed to have functioned in a manner that was comfortable to them. According to Dominican Priest Bartolme de Las Casas, on arrival in the region the Spaniards found the Neo- Indian settlements to be well established self-sustaining entities in which people lived to an advanced age.[1] Although the Europeans contributed to the development of the Caribbean region,the notion that Caribbean civilization is a primitive one and it was lucky to have had European inputs for its development is one that I strongly disagree with. Neo Indians in particular had established religious beliefs, agricultural techniques, trade and political movements before Christopher Columbus arrived in the Caribbean. Religions are important as they provide in sights into the codes of conduct and world view that guided many civilizations. [1] Like established societies Neo Indians also had their own religious practices. Their religion was a colourful mixture of nature worship, ancestor worship and protective magic. [2] They had three gods, the God of fertility, God for farming and a God to watch over the recently departed. Their religious gods comprised of several female and male gods which were represented by a Zemi. These were made from shell, wood or bone and helped them to enter into a spiritual realm book.
