TOPIC: EXCRISE OF PARTICAL LIFE Practical Life as a Means of Self-Development Montessori distinguished between two functions of the bodily system. One part relates the individual to his environment: the nervous, sensory, muscular and bone systems. The other relates the organs to each other: the circulatory, endocrine, digestive, respiratory and excretory systems. Man’s mind and personality develop as he learns to command and respect all his physical means so that ideas, feeling and motion can be changed into constructive work. Montessori divided her exercises for children in practical life into four areas: Control of Movement, Care of Person, Care of the Environment, and Grace and Courtesy. These four areas had two levels of development. The first stage, the personal, is one in which the child has an inner urge to control his movements, and will practice isolated movements separately. At this time the child has a strong will to “do it myself,” to take care of his own person. He wants to master those common tasks which will free him from the imposition of the adult’s pace and interference. The second stage is the social, in which a child who can handle himself can act consciously in common projects and can assist others. * 1. To help the child become independent. * 2. To enable him to correlate his own physical, psychic and moral desires: * 3. To initiate in the child respect and love for any work. * 4. To help the child to perform the activities of daily life with joy and skill. * 5. To help the child on the road to his faster normalization. In Montessori classroom, the Practical Life Activities are the first activities the child is introduced to the Montessori environment because they can immediately satisfy the children's inner needs and desires.
