A double row of weather-beaten, false-fronted buildings, most of which had never been painted, and a few scattered dwellings, some of logs, most of stone.”(L’Amour p.168). Most of these towns share many similarities with Painted Rock in the way they are described or pictured. They have one, main street stretching down its center with tattered false-fronted buildings lining each side, which include buildings like a town hall, saloon, emporium and sheriffs office. Other characteristics of the old west are the numerous landscapes that extend across rough country. There are sweeping, wide-open plains, arid, barren desert wastelands, colossus, looming mountain ranges, rolling mountain foothills, canyons, rivers and overall an intensely rugged wilderness expanded across the wild frontier.
In Mesopotamia, the extremely flat land between Euphrates and Tigris River in present day Iraq and Kuwait, the unpredictable floods by Euphrates River forcing the farmers into heroic effort to keep the ripening grain fields from being drowned by water. Farmers have to build irrigation system to protect the grain from the unregulated flood. The raising in population and overusing of the irrigation system also turned the soil unproductive and lowered the output. Life was difficult for farmers depending on the agriculture. Egyptian civilization originates in regions of East Africa along Nile River, isolated by desserts and water.

The ragged scavengers ran across the eroded streets kicking up dust, trying to find shelter from the rain. The rain came down more heavily within the span of thirty seconds, making vision of three or more feet impossible. The thunder followed the rain.

Capote uses vivid words to give the reader an accurate view of the town of Holcomb. The author’s use of imagery provides the reader with a sense of a quaint town and helps us visualize how the story took place.
“The village of Holcomb stands on the high wheat plains of western Kansas, a lonesome area that other Kansans call ‘out there.’…The land is flat, the views are awesomely extensive; horses, herds of cattle, a white cluster of grain elevators rising as gracefully as Greek temples are visible long before a traveler reaches them.” After reading this quotation, I naturally concluded that he is an emotional and sensitive guy. He has lots of thoughts. The quotation shows well his feeling about Kansas, and I think his words are descriptive and hard to understand at once to me. I sometimes got surprised at the fact that he really killed the Clutter’s family because he does not look that aggressive. Although he has experienced lots of violent events and happenings that can affect his mental negatively and his friends Hickock kind of uses Perry to commit the murders, he thinks like a child and has his own plans.

This cornfield and sorghum patch behind the barn were the only broken land in
