Self Recognition in “The Wizard of Oz” Fantasy literature refers to characters that embark on a journey, fundamentally learning about themselves and presuming it to the audience. In the movie and novel ‘The Wizard of Oz’ viewers learn how the characters discover self-recognition through their journey of hardships, perseverance, faith, courage and love. All these qualities are expressed in the main characters that include Dorothy, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. Dorothy is always persisting and having faith that she will return home, the Tin Man is the loving one, whom hopes to receive a heart and the Cowardly Lion is the courageous one, but believes he does not possess it. Through struggle and the precarious journey, Dorothy, the Tin Man and Lion discover that they always possessed the qualities they longed for. Dorothy, the main character learns that without going through a long, difficult journey she would never be able to discover her true home, which she had all along. At the beginning of the movie, Dorothy begins at a prolonged disadvantage, feeling unloved and unappreciated. The movie demonstrates self-discovery and the realizations of the great power that one has but often forgets. All three characters learn that they have everything they need, and to look no further than their inner self. Dorothy, whom is searching to be appreciated, realizes her family truly loves her and she would be nothing without them. Lion was always courageous, he just needed to get through hardships and challenges himself to realize it. Tin Man, whom was searching for a heart realizes that he always showed love and emotion. Although the characters believed they lacked these personas, the journey they set off on taught them that they already possessed the qualities they had always longed
