As such there is no one-way of approach in assisting clients, as far as I can see there are no overriding theories, which influence my intervention and practice since I have not been aware of them. This exercise is therefore retroactive as far as I am concerned and what I have to do is look at my practice and then identify elements of theories that I recognise, in what I have been delivering. When I first see clients I try to make them comfortable to enable me to develop some level of rapport with them so that they the can express what their expectations regarding the meeting and answer questions that are somewhat personal. I try to keep things on a positive level and respect client’s views and feelings showing empathy but at the same time clarifying their expectations. In this respect I believe that I am taking a person centred approach.

I attempted to be sensitive and explain the positives of maintaining good personal hygiene without directly relating the remarks to him. The conversation ended badly with M becoming very angry and upset and ultimately violent towards me. I have reflected on this incident a lot because it was distressing for M and resulted in my relationship with him being damaged. I concluded that it may have been easier for M if the conversation had been broken down into short sessions spread over a few weeks. So that the experience was not as intense for him.

This reflective essay has been drafted from a real life counselling session, which was undertaken by a professional counsellor. In this reflective essay, I put theory to practice by reflecting and analyzing a fifty minute couselling session. Before the counselling session I was very unsure of what to expect and extremely nervous as I had not previously attended a professional counselling session. On my way to the session, my feelings of nervousness and anxiousness become stronger as I practiced the things that I was planning on saying.
What I had forgotten and did not employ is not to argue anyone’s point of view. Nor, did I know exactly why advisory panels used braining storming as a form of decision making. Therefore, my experience was without definitive methodology. Which in retrospect added to the confusion, causing arguments or debates amongst team member’s about their points of view with not solutions in site. We/I was void of an organized format categorizing each Cohorts ideas or thoughts.
