Parson 1 Parson 1 Roberts/Macerollo Humanities 14 March 2012 What is a true Hero’s Journey? The book The Odyssey is a perfect example of Hero’s Journey. Some people who exemplify Hero’s Journey are Hector and Odysseus. Hector was a loyal husband who knew if he did not fight everyone he knew would be dead so he told his wife that he has to do this to be a hero of his town. Therefore he left to fight because he knew he was the only one who could save his city; Hector ended up dying in battle showing his true heroic capabilities. The journey of a hero suggests that they are loyal, have great strength, and are willing to do what ever it takes for others. He faced many struggles. Odysseus' first step is his getting called to adventure while he is still in his everyday life. He was just living an ordinary life of a citizen then Hermes called him to adventure. During his journey back to Ithaca Odysseus faced many struggles such as running into Calypso the “Sea Nymph”. “Hard-hearted you are, you gods! You unrivaled lords of jealousy- scandalized when goddesses sleep with mortals, openly, even when one has made the man her husband”(Homer 156). Calypso is stating that she wants to basically hookup with Odysseus. This was a struggle for him because he is already married and does not want to be unfaithful to his wife. The Cyclops “son of Poseidon” was another huge struggle for Odysseus because he has never been beaten before “…telling me to fear the gods or avoid their wrath! We Cyclops never blink at Zeus and Zeus’s shield of storm and thunder, or any other blessed god- we’ve got more force by far”(Homer 220). The last main struggle Odysseus faced was after he got back to Ithaca and showed his real identity and started fighting the suitors. For example Odysseus said to the suitors “ you must leave my palace! See to your feasting elsewhere, devour your own possessions… But I’ll cry out to the everlasting gods in hope that Zeus will pay you back with a vengeance- all of you destroyed in my house while I go Scott-free myself!”(Homer 90).
