Austin State University Evaluation of Four Computer Assisted Career Guidance Systems I have researched four commonly used Computer Assisted Career Guidance Systems (CACG) and I will compare each CACG based on how useful each system is in accomplishing what it was designed to do. I will first give a brief description of each of the four CACGs and then compare their effectiveness to one another. The CACGs that will be discussed are Career Scope, Kuder Journey, Choices, and Texas CARES Online. Computer assisted career guidance systems have been used for many years to help clients solve career problems through increasing their awareness of career options, occupational knowledge, and enhanced self-knowledge. CACGs can be used to assess client’s needs, provides self-assessment of interests, values and abilities. CACGs also provide information to clients about specific careers and required training. They also provide individual search options to match a client’s personality traits with occupations. CACGs are often used by career counselors to assist in helping a client to conduct a self-assessment, career search, and find out specific information about occupations. CACG’s are especially important to career counselors who subscribe to the Cognitive Information Processing Theory because it addresses the areas of self-knowledge, knowledge about options, decision making, and executive processing. (Peterson et al., 1991) The first CACG that I examined is called Career Scope.
