An investigator has a duty to investigate the cases they are assigned to the best of their abilities. What does this mean? It is more than just following protocol, there are ethical and legal factors that must be taken into account if the case is to be solved and convicted to the point where it gives the victims and their families peace of mind. An investigator has to show a level of empathy and care so as to make the concerned parties feel the case is in the best hands. There are obviously many different crimes that need special attention, but the two, in my opinion, that require the most care are rape and homicide. Both events are extremely traumatic to the affected groups, and they take the most time and precision while they are being analyzed. An investigator needs to go above and beyond the call of duty when investigating these types of cases, and they need to have the right mentality and personality to make sure nothing is missed or lost.
First, we will start off with the best procedure for investigating rape. The fact that most rapes are not reported, and the ones that are have an extremely high attrition rate, should be enough to cause an investigator to want to make sure no details are missed, and that they use a certain level of compassion when dealing with the victims that do come forward. This is one of the most traumatic experiences that could happen in a normal person’s life. People take a lot of comfort in knowing that they have a certain level of personal space and safety. When that is violated, when something so valued is taken from them, it is really hard to deal with the idea of what happened. This is why rape is so difficult to investigate. A woman can easily forget or block important details for the sake of their own sanity. One of the highest levels of trust, especially in cases where the victim knew their attacker, has been snatched away from her in such a short period of time.
