English 101 November 25, 2012 Ethics When faced with what if situations everyone would like to think that they would do the “right” thing. The “right” thing is defined as the moral and ethical choice. The problem is that is easier said than done. It is hard to know how you will act until you are in the actual situation. Many situations can test the strength of one’s morality. In the middle of a deep moral conflict a person becomes looks inward and follows their intuition, hoping that it will guide them towards the morally correct decision. One morning Jackson is driving to work as usual he is running a bit late, so he is speeding. When Jackson reaches down to change the CD, his car hits something. He spins to a stop. Multiple cars have hit him and each other trying to avoid the accident. When Jackson looks up he can see that he hit a person. The person is not looking very good: Jackson is sure that she is dead. He shakily gets out of his car, and looks around at the damage that he caused. Several cars have been badly smashed, but more importantly Jackson has killed someone with his careless driving. A woman comes up to him, tears running down her face, and obviously very shaken up. Jackson asks her what is wrong. She explains that she just ran over someone. He then asks her where this person is and she points towards the person that he ran over. Jackson doesn’t understand why, but for some reason this woman thinks that she caused this accident and killed the person. Jackson is well aware that he is the cause of the accident and the woman’s death. Jackson is facing the hardest decisions of his life. He can tell the truth or he can let an innocent woman take the blame. Jackson needs to step up and admit that he caused the accident and be prepared to face whatever consequences come his way.
