RUNNING HEAD: Ethics Today Ethics Today By: Kelcie Priebe Business Ethics 1/10/2013 Ethics are very important in all of our lives and play a role in how we handle ourselves every day. Over the years, business ethics has progressed from almost non-exist to an everyday function and sometimes without you even knowing it. Every company in America has a Code of Ethics that they follow to make sure they are following the proper rules and being ethically moral in their business practices. It didn’t use to be that way and companies have definitely learned from the past. Business ethics didn’t really start to make a dent in the workplace until the 1970’s, but before that if you uttered the word ethics, no one would really know what you were talking about. Around the 1970’s people began to study business ethics and apply those theories to actual business practices. They put together how being responsible and making the right decisions would lead to a better business outcome and less negative impact. Probably one of the biggest scandals in government made people start to question ethics in our government system. The Watergate scandal caused quite the uproar and soon people were talking about business ethics and how to uphold these practices in the government, as well as the workplace (Ferrell, O. C., Fraedrich, J., & Ferrell, L., 2010). Towards the end of the 80’s and on to the 90’s, business ethics was being offered as a course of study in many colleges and it was being taught to employees in the workplace. Organizations were finally starting to understand that business ethics were important in progress and succeeding (Ferrell, O. C., Fraedrich, J., & Ferrell, L., 2010).
