All leadership is responsible for influencing followers to perform an action, complete a task, or behave in a specific manner. Effective leaders influence process, stimulate change in subordinate’s attitudes and values, augment followers’ self-efficacy beliefs, and foster the internalization of the leaders’ vision by utilizing strategies of empowerment. It is believed that the nurturing aspect of leaders can raise organizational cultures and employee values to high levels of ethical concern. Ethical leadership requires ethical leaders. If leaders are ethical, they can ensure that ethical practices are carried out throughout the organization. On the other hand there is a such thing as an unethical leader. Being unethical in the workplace can include anything from taking personal phone calls while at your desk, telling someone the "check is in the mail", when in fact it hasn't even been written yet, and even taking office supplies home for your personal use. I will explain the common characteristics of poor decision making, the three ways of resisting requests to act unethically, and three ways you can choose to lead ethically. There are a few common characteristics of poor decision making which can ultimately effect one’s leadership which can hurt a business and allow the leader to lose respect from his peers. First one has to learn ways to resist requests to act unethically. The first is to recognize when a request is unethical. Read your company’s employee manual and ethics guidelines to ensure you are clear on what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior. The second is to buy time so you can conduct some research to find out. Human resource professionals and the company’s legal department are terrific resources for these types of discussions.
