This article is based upon different type of fallacies Beres uses to tell his audience that the Common Application process is a waste of many, and doesn’t give the students what they deserve. He uses Appeal to Ignorance when he talks about how those who have a high SAT score and “mommy and daddy credit card isn’t maxed out”. So what if their parents are working hard for this kids? Appeal to Popular Opinion by saying “kids are taking spots at universities that they may, in fact, have little to no interest in.” How can afford to go to a university that will cost at least 30K to graduate just because they don’t like it? He mentions that’s X amount of Y students got accepted into a particular college, but doesn’t talk about how many percentage of Y actually meet the requirements of their “dream”
Summary/Response for “Athletes and Education” In this article, “Athletes and Education,” Neil H. Petrie reflects on his life and uses his life examples to try to prove that the college athletic system is flawed. In the way that colleges use the athletes for entertainment, but when it comes to getting an education the students are cut short. 2Petrie presents that colleges are all talk when it comes down to their student athletes going to school for a good education. Petrie says that the pressures put on athletes compromises their academics. Also, the endless hours on the field which drains even the best students’ mentally and physically.
We live in a country where everyone should be treated equally. Just because a student chooses to be athletic doesn’t mean he/she should use their athletic skills to get a free ride throughout their college years. A college student being exempt from classes is unfair to other students, it is their loss of education and not taking college so serious will later on bring consequences. Why go to college if you don't take the classes? Seems kind of pointless, most athletes don't go pro after college, so I why not get the full educational experience?
“College Football Players Deserve Pay for Play” by Rod Gilmore, “Why Student-Athletes Should Not Be Paid” by Kabir Sawhney, and “The Shame of College Sports” by Taylor Branch all voice their opinions on this argument. I believe college athletes should have their full tuition, meals, room and board paid for; but I do not think the school should necessarily be responsible for paying the athletes especially since so many are not responsible with their money. Basically, I believe that the school should not be responsible for giving these student athletes money. In many cases, these athletes walk around campus with rock star status anyway. If they were paid it would further that perception that they were something other than simply a student athlete.
With reference to this, if students shy away from attaining greater dreams and goals and argue that they are not bright enough, then that is only an excuse. As the president of the university declares, there is no such thing as smartness; it is simply how much people try to get what they need and desire since lethargy and the thought that someone is smart will not take them anywhere (TED, 2013). The four pillars of success, he confirmed, were forming community amongst the students, high expectations, using researchers to create researchers and educational faculty getting concerned with their students’ affairs (TED, 2013). The high expectations create a feeling of curiosity
He said he was able to get a bunch of financial aid, but he still has a great amount of college to pay off. He also said that for his specific school, he did not enjoy his classmates. He said many of them would set off the fire alarms or were loud because of drinking. He also said that he felt the administration was doing a poor job of enforcing the rules and helping students who truly need the
As well as “The making new friends” challenge. I mean why bother making new friends if you are going to lose them each year? But in the other hand, you should expect (and accept) the diversity of people. What to expect from college is not really something to specific. For example, many of us weren’t really use to studying during high school, mainly because it was so unchallenging.
This notion presented in the dorms is a microcosm of American society. The sense of community seems washed away due to societies influence to make the social groups, formed out of fear, comfort and commonalities, and the lack of motivation to create a diverse place. As freshmen, a higher administrator assigns students to a floor; these people are instantly forced to be the ones students surround themselves with. Different groups emerge as individuals gather with people who they know or think they will get along with. Each searching for similar backgrounds, and interests.
INDIVIDUAL ESSAY Education is very important for an individual's success in life it’s generally seen as the foundation of society. Students are unaware of the devastating trial they could encounter when they drop out of college lacking the knowledge to harmonize with the modern day lifestyle. According to a Harvard analysis of data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development the United States has the highest drop out rate in the industrialized world. A study funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation found that the main reason why students drop out of college are that they are academically incapable , peer pressure and are experiencing the devouring effects of family affairs. Students drop out of college because they are academically incapable.
Adding all this, it doesn’t leave much time for studying or doing homework. Due to this lack of time, I ended my baseball career. An NCAA study showed that 60% of “student athletes” viewed themselves more as athletes than students. I can see this with having 14 hours a week of practice in the off season. Coaches have prioritized a winning season over a good education.
