McNeil Ethical Dilemma Paper An ethical dilemma is defined as a choice between two options, both of which will bring a negative result based on society and personal guidelines (yourdictionary.com). Kim Davis the county clerk in Rowan County Kentucky made national headlines when she defied a federal court order to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples. On July 1st, 2015 four couples were denied marriage licenses, two same sex couples and two opposite sex couples. Davis cited that her “beliefs as an Apostolic Christian prevented her from issuing same sex marriage licenses.” August 2015 Judge David Bunning issued a stay temporarily barring Davis from “applying her ‘no marriage licenses’ policy to future marriage license requests” (Mack, David Sept. 1st 2015). “I never imagined a day like this would come, where I would be asked to violate a central teaching of Scripture and of Jesus Himself regarding marriage. To issue a marriage license which conflicts with God's definition of marriage, with my name affixed to the certificate, would violate my conscience” (Liberty Counsel, Sept. 1st 2015). On September 3rd, 2015 Bunning ordered Davis to appear in court after the four couples who were originally denied marriage licenses, sought to have Davis and her six county clerks held in contempt of court. Judge Bunning ruled in favor of the plaintiffs and remanded Davis into custody. On September 8th, 2015 Banning ordered Davis to be released from jail stating that she was not to interfere in any way whether directly or indirectly with the efforts of her deputy clerks to issue marriage licenses to all legally eligible couples (Volokh, Eugene September 8th 2015). Davis returned to work on September 14th, 2015 and said that she would not personally interfere with any deputy clerks issuing licenses
