Kayleigh Potter Ethical Dilemma Paper May 13, 2013 CJA/324 Edward Hastings An ethical dilemma is a situation in which an individual cannot rely on moral judgment to help guide one’s discretion in making a decision (Braswell). Ethical dilemmas are problematic as they do not have a cut and dry solution. The police officers of Casselberry, Florida have been faced with an ethical dilemma after one man took drastic measures to protect his son. Allen Banyacski, of Casselberry, Florida, is facing charges of battery and cruelly toward children. Allen Banyacski attempted to resolve an issue in which his son was being bullied in a legal and ethical manner (WPXI). Allen Banyacski reported that three middle school aged students had been bullying his son all year. Allen Banyacski reported the incidences to the South Seminole Middle School staff where the children attend; however, his complaints were ignored and the bullying continued (WPXI). Allen Banyacski stated he felt like his son was continually being picked on. After Allen Banyacski’s complaints to the school remained ineffective, Allen Banyacski took matters into his own hands and confronted the three middle school aged boys. While in a confrontation with the three middle school aged boys, Allen Banyacski is accused of exiting his vehicle and threatening the boys. Allen Banyacski is also accused of slapping on of the boys and spitting on one of the boys. Allen Banyacski then reentered his vehicle and drove away (WPXI). Allen Banyacski states his action was a “knee jerk reaction, which I shouldn’t have done” (WPXI). WPXI states Allen Banyacski further stated, “I don’t regret confronting the children. My son has been bullied all year, and the school has done nothing”. Since the incident, according to WPXI, the principle of South Seminole Middle School will walk Allen Banyacski’s son half way home.
