* What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?
Discrimination means to distinguish, single out, or make a distinction. An example of discrimination would be when I worked for this Korean, he fired me because I was pregnant. To him, pregnant woman could not work. Prejudice refers to negative judgements and/or views about a group formed without knowledge, thought, or reason. Stereotyping is having a generalizations often negative about a group based upon samples that do not represent the group, in which the generalization becomes so well known. An example of stereotyping would be saying that all white people are well off.
* What are the causes of discrimination?
Discrimination covers and scenarios where an individual or company treats a person or group of people unfairly due to a particular characteristic. It can be based on any attribute that is viewed as marking the victim out as being different. Discrimination is often based on ignorance, fear, and stereotypical viewpoints. Irresponsible behavior by politicians, the media and other influential groups are all more causes of discrimination because mist people get their views of a wide range of social and political topics from consuming media ( tv, radio, Internet, newspaper, etc.). Tribal behaviors are another because with humans being a tribal species. We have a tendency to embrace sameness rather than difference. The last possible cause of discrimination is archaic religion or cultural beliefs. Organized religion plays a particularly powerful role in determining attitudes towards outsider groups.
