One chemical soil test could test for Nitrogen levels of the soil: Nitrogen is a crucial element in plant growth so adequate that Nitrogen must be present. If lacking in Nitrogen, these tests will advise the cooperative extension services to plant legumes, such as beans or alphalfa, which contain nitrogen fixing bacteria in their root nodules. These rizobium bacteria will increase nitrogen levels in soil and lead to sustainable agriculture. A physical soil test could be done to determine the soil type. Soil types include combinations of sand, silt, clay, or the mixture of the three called loam. Soil composition is crucial when planning crop devolopment because different types of different permeabilities and parosites. Thus the soil will determine how well the ground holds water, and will also allow the cooperative extention service to plant crops with soil preference according to the soil type found in the tests. One advantage of using inorganic commerical fertilizers is that they are easy to transport and acquire in comparison to manure or compost. Inorganic commericial fertilizers can provide phosphorus, which is often a limiting factor in plant growth. However, inaddition to being expensive and inadequate in providing all necessary nutrients to plants, inorganic commericial fertilizers can cause serious environmental harm when their nutrients enter runoff. Phosphates and Nitrates enter runoff and run into lakes causing cultural eutrophication, which in turn, suffocates fish and other organisms by causing a large algal bloom and death which reduces dissolved oxygen content. Planting windbreaks is an effective method to decrease soil erosion. Rows of trees are plants to block sweeping winds along flat plains. This prevents loose soil paritcles from being swept into the air. The roots of the trees also anchor the soil in the ground, decreasing soil erosion.
