Essey regarding Narration and Point of view In the story “The Boarding House” we follow a little family, while they are going through a bit of crisis. First the mother leaves the father, because he becomes a drunk, and destroys the family business. Then the mother decides to open a boarding house, where men can come and stay the night. One day the mother Mrs. Mooney found out, that one of younger lodgings called Mr. Doran, who was a married man, had had an affair with her daughter Polly. This created a lot fuss, because if people found out of his sexual relations with Polly, he could lose his job and wife. The story is written in such a way, that the narrator tells the story from the different characters point of view. He does this to make us have sympathy with the character, even if it is the character that made the mistake. This technique is called Omniscient Third Person Narrator. This is used very much in the text. We really get to see this technique, when we see the story from Mr. Doran’s point of view. He makes him look like a good guy, who can just sit and watch his life fall apart bit by bit. “While he was sitting helplessly on the side of the bed in shirt and trousers she tapped lightly at his door and entered” (s. a59, l. 146-147). You get the sense that he is really sorry about what happened, and if he could take it back he would. Later on he is also comforting her, and telling her that is it all going to be alright. We also see the story from Mrs. Mooney’s point of view. Here the narrator makes it sound like, that Mr. Doran is a heartless bastard. “He had simply taken advantage of Polly’s youth and inexperience: that was evident. The question was. What reparation would he make? There must be reparation made in such cases. It is all very well for the man: he can go his ways as if nothing had happened, having had his moment of pleasure, but the girl has
