Whig Party - the political party of the United States that existed in the years 1832-1856. Party emerged as an opposition to democracy, Andrew Jackson and the Democratic Party. In particular, the Whigs supported the supremacy of Congress over the executive and promoted a program of modernization and economic protectionism. For a long time the party took place in the two-party system of American politics. The name dates back to the party nicknamed the American patriots during the American Revolution, who fought against the British metropolis, when the Whigs, from the name of the British Whig Party, called people who opposed the authoritarian rule. President William Harrison won re-election in 1840 and Zachary Taylor, first elected 1848. Both were major military leaders whose names are associated outstanding victories, and if Harrison was active in politics for many years to Taylor's presidential election was actually debut in politics.
