The topic of the space race and its accomplishments took a great reaction over the United States and Soviet Union. This is a subject worth getting to know more information about because it had a significant impact on both nations. The space race has affected present technology in many ways. The man landing on the moon was the most important of the things achieved in the space race. The reaction of the people in the United States when man landed on the moon was a sense of accomplishment and I think that strived us to keep trying to have more success in space.…show more content…
Both countries spent billions of dollars on their space programs, because they believed that with controlling space they could have a more powerful country (Breuer 27). When the Soviet Union launched Sputnik and it became the first satellite in space, people of the United States and the world were scared of what the Soviets were going to do with this (Breuer 78-79). The Soviets continued to make major advances in the space race. In 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik II, which carried a dog into space, and in 1961 the Soviets had the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin (Timeline of Space Explorations 1). In 1958, The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was created (Timeline of Space Exploration 1). President John F. Kennedy decided he wanted to do something big before The United States lost the space race. He decided to invest a lot of time and money into putting the first man on the moon (Sorensen 1). A series of missions known as Apollo were announced to help put man on the moon. On the mission Apollo 11 in 1969, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin become the first men to walk on the moon, while Michael Collins orbits around the moon alone (Timeline of Space Exploration 2).
