Unit 3 Project: Defying Mother Nature Pamela Leary Kaplan University CM107-04 Rosa Mae Leary born Rosa Mae Barron came into the world on May 2, 1917. Though she’s ninety-six years old now, she did not get to be ninety-six by chance, believe it has been a long road through her journey of overcoming adversity of the times living in the deep south, and having the courage to be able to endure enough to overcome any hardships, that may have come her way. Rosa Mae was a wife and mother to 16 children, two of which were stillborn. She also has 50 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren. However, her story begins when she can remember at the age of four, picking cotton in the fields of the Delta, known to locals in rural South Mississippi.…show more content…
From these high winds, and weather patterns of the hurricane, tornadoes were able to form in the area. As they were going into the house out of the fast approaching storm, Rosa Mae noticed there was a tornado heading straight towards the path of her home were her children were, whom she needed to protect. However, Rosa Mae Leary was not going to just let some tornado come in and tear down the house her husband had built with his own hands to provide for them, and although she had 16 children, two of those which were stillbirths, she was not about to lose another child. Through act of God or not! So she grabbed a double edge axe that had been used for cutting wood, and as the tornado continued to approach, she dropped the double edge ax down into the block of wood, thus causing the tornado to jump! The jumping tornado landed some 10 miles away from their house, thus saving her home and her children. However when the tornado landed it killed some people and damaged their homes. Rosa Mae Leary knew that the tornado that was heading for her and her family on that day was deadly, she just chose to take some will of her own and the power that she had in her, with the intuition that she was given and have courage enough to stand up against the storm.
