Social Media plays a vital role in twenty-first century society. Virtually everyone, even older generations, have some if not multiple forms of social media. With so many people being a part of this massive social media "movement," there is an obscurely large market that allow businesses to make money. Some media companies have attempted to charge for their service; however, it often limits how much the company can grow. A more common and successful, way for social media companies to make money from their audience is ads. These adsare viewed by millions of users daily and are a massive money-maker. However, with newly developed technology, companies are now able to track people's specific likes and display ads that are tailored to each user. The ability to personalize ads can have many negative side effects on users. A minor way this form of advertisement affects people is by consistently displaying products that are exactly what the user loves, moreover, the ads cause massive over spending and in extreme cases debt. Because the ads are based on a user's preferences, the user will only view ads that agree with their beliefs and likes. If users only view ads that agree with their preferences, it will create a false real world by not showing the customer the other side of the story. For example, if a person has strict political beliefs and while viewing their Facebook feed only see news stories supporting their views, they will never be exposed to alternate views; therefore, limiting the user's knowledge and creating a false reality. Not only does this fool people into believing their ideas are true without fail, but it also does not allow people a chance to argue their points.
