Common Barriers to Effective Teams Challenges of Knowing Where to Begin At the start of a project, team members may be at a loss as to how to begin. Also, they may have reached the end of a task but are unable to move on to the next step or put the task to rest. Floundering often results from a lack of clear goals, so the remedy is to go back to the team’s mission or plan and make sure that it is clear to everyone. Team leaders can help move the team past floundering by asking, “What is holding us up? Do we need more data?
The U.S. Army War College makes the case that senior leadership often takes place in an environment that is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. Problems in this arena are rarely simple and clear cut. If they were, they would likely have already been solved by someone else. If not well considered (and sometimes even when they are), today’s solutions become tomorrow’s problems. Inherent in the concept of strategic leadership is the notion that this environment requires different ways of thinking and problem solving.
Role of Project Leader “As the process leader, your job, if not your mantra, is to enable your group to approach this standard and keep them there” (DeCarlo, 2004, p. 146). A project cannot be considered a success if the knowledge needed to maintain it and create it on a daily basis has not been developed. A project leader role “is a complex, high-speed, self-correcting venture during which people interact in search of a desirable result under conditions of high uncertainty, high change, and high stress” (DeCarlo, 2004, p.34). A project leader must know what skills are needed to complete, support, and produce the project. They also need to understand the skills that will help the other team members meet the strategic goals, and which investments that are required to develop those skills.
However, as stated in one of the afore-mentioned points, leadership isn’t as simple as it seems. It involves a whole lot of varying dynamics, which distinguish distinct leadership styles/patterns. To unearth the intricacies of leadership in my essay, I shall briefly try to describe and link a few leadership theories citing relevant examples. By the end of the essay, the reader should have a brief and basic knowledge of varying leadership styles and how they may be important in certain personal situations. As a starting point for my analysis, I ask myself the question ‘ why is leadership important ?
Maybe it is the way I was brought up, something I learned in school or simply an observance of everyday living. Whatever it was that made me come to the realization of this map does not matter. Somewhere along the line I decided I wanted to excel in my communication skills, the ability to think realistically, effectively and critically and have the ability to maintain a certain level of patience. After reading about this map I tried to take it to a more personal level. I asked myself what skills and abilities do I want to master as it pertains to my family, finances, education, career and technology.

When I do things, I do them in such a methodical way, that I am not satisfied until they are just right in my eyes. When working on group projects, I sometimes get frustrated when others do not put forth the same level of effort I do. Often I find myself losing patience with those who do not share the same idea or level of dedication. At the leadership class at IUJ, I have come to know that leadership is the process to achieve own goal of task through organising other people’s behaviours toward same direction creating cooperative actions. If a leader has variety of power sources, the person can influence people’s behaviours more effectively.
I know this is a lot of different philosophies of leadership, but I do not think there is just one type of leader and to be a good leader one needs to be open to learning new things. Plus different situations require different types of leaders.
It is essential to inform people of changes and why these changes are happening as when you are aware of why something is being altered you are much more likely to accept it. * Conflicting Roles; at times we may have to do tasks that are not normally in our job descriptions and this can often be seen as ‘treading on someone’s toes’ causing conflict and power struggles. To prevent this sort of conflict it needs to be explained to each individual why tasks have been given to other people to complete. Doing this
The paper will end with a conclusion toward the power-influence approach recommendation for a good approach to use. Leadership and Approach Understanding leadership is based on the research, studies, and theories of experts in leadership and with importance relevant in the effectiveness of the leadership ability to be a leader. The term leadership has been widely research and is consider to have created some very ambiguity toward the meaning of leadership. According to Yukl (2010, p 2, Para 4) “The term leadership is a word taken from the common vocabulary and incorporated into the technical vocabulary of a scientific discipline without being precisely redefined.” Research has revealed that further understanding of leadership has been categorized in three possible variables and these are variables of leadership characteristics that include leaders, followers, and situation. Understanding these variables of characteristics theories look to define the effects or effectiveness involved in each characteristic that mainly pertaining to the
