physical ailment. The doctors of this era simply believe that her illness does not exist in this era. As a doctor, John doesn't believe she is sick either and the narrator tries to make it seem if the woman illness is not real but something she is making up. Her gender has a lot to do with this because of this era, they didn't care for women and her opinion didn't count. John refuses to listen to her feelings on the issues, instead of talking to find the problem.

Women were expected to remain pure, modest, devout in their faith and submissive to their male counterparts. In order to combat the medical and professional oppression against women during this time period, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a feminist writer, decided to write this short story after her own experience as a female patient during this time as an attempt to save other women from becoming mad from doctor’s “rest cures” that were so popular at this time. There are many themes represented by different symbols throughout the text, mainly the yellow wallpaper itself. Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper is a short story condemning the androcentric thought process of the late 19th century medical professionals, portraying the discrimination of women physically and mentally by their male counterparts. Charlotte Perkins Gilman understood that writing was one of the very few ways women could express themselves in a time where they had little to no rights.
She does this in order to show how the obsession that the girlchild has with her own body was one of the largest factors in the suicide. Another one of the stereotypes that Piercy draws upon is their behavior. Piercy describes how the girlchild was told to “play coy.” This describes the societal pressure of what is stereotypically “lady-like.” She was “advised” to act as other ladies would act, and she tried to the furthest extent she could manage. Likewise, the peculiarity of this aspect can be comprehended within the Egyptian poem “The Beginning of the Song that Diverts the Heart”. This ancient poem is centered upon a recalcitrant woman. Her undertaking was to sway the man she loved to engage in an ascetic relationship. The similarities can be evidently understood and recognized within “Zhongzi, Please,” and “The Beginning of the Song that Diverts the Heart”.
Where Marie de France comes from, many people disagree with women having power through literature. They disagree with women having much power at all. Because of this, Marie de France feels the urge to protect herself from those people. She argues that credit and respect should be bestowed upon anyone who earns it, regardless of their gender. Before her story even begins, Marie de France contests the idea of female inferiority.
'Curley's wife is a very complex character because she is presented in different personalities at different chapters and in this chapter we see that she desires freedom and fame. Steinbeck presents her in such way that or opinion of her changes through out the novel, first we see her as a flirt then we see her presented in a horrible racist personality and now Steinbeck presents her as Innocent. Steinbeck did this because at this chapter where she dies it's like he wants us to feel sympathy for her because not that she is dead her problems are gone and there is not need for attentions because now she looks relaxed laying down on the hay. In the short fiction, Chopin explores her belief that marriage and freedom cannot exist together by using two powerful ironies: situational irony and dramatic irony. Kate Chopin first uses a situational irony to suggest that the women in the nineteenth century did not always feel sorrowful for their husband’s death. The situational irony happened right after Mrs. Mallard heard about the news of her husband’s death. In contrast to the grief and sorrow that Mrs. Mallard was supposed to feel, the things around her were described with a joyful mood “open window… comfortable, roomy armchair… trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life… countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves” (Chopin 1). The event is an example of a situational irony because the mood of the event was happy, which is different from what one would have expected.
She is desperate to feel noticed and special and this shows how lonely she is and isolated. Steinbeck presented Curley's Wife in different ways. First she is seen as 'a tart', a threat, using her power, being racist but then she is presented as also lonely and compassionate to Lennie. In Steinbeck's letter to the actress playing her in the play version, he says 'if you could break down her thousand defences she has built up, you would find a nice person, an honest person, and you would end up loving her.' We see in the end what a nice person she can be and that she wants to be loved like anyone else.’ |
However one could also argue that Larkin seems to justify violence against women by suggesting that access to women is something men have been unfairly deprived of. This becomes evident in the first stanza where Larkin presents the girl in ‘white satin’ suggesting her purity and virginity. One could disagree with this statement and interpret the de-feminizing of women differently. It could be suggested that Larkin combines masculinity and femininity together, ‘moustached lips’, to show his view that men and women should be viewed more equally in society. However I disagree with this alternative interpretation as I feel Larkin tries to portray the attacks ‘snaggle-toothed’ and boss-eyed’ are sadistic and grotesque but he does not disagree with
