Johnny Tremain, a young apprentice silversmith, is caught up in the danger and excitement of Boston in the 1770’s just before the Revolutionary War. Johnny can’t help being swept along by the powerful currents that will lead to the Boston Tea Party and the Battle of Lexington. But even more gripping than living through the drama of Revolutionary Boston is the important discovery Johnny made about his own life. The character of Johnny is very complex. Before a tragic accident, preventing him from doing what he loved to do, working with silver, Johnny was prideful and unforgiving. After his accident, he was humbled, and forgave his worst enemy. Through the years, Johnny Tremain gained an eternal value to carry through life: kindness for his friends, and enemies. Around the Lapham home and silversmith business, Johnny was always telling everybody what to do. He thought of himself bigger, better, and smarter than everyone else. Because he was the best young one in the shop, he thought he was the best one in the world. Even Mr. Lapham, Johnny’s master, agreed Johnny was getting above himself. He said that God would send a punishment for his pride. Dove intentionally caused an accident in the shop to serve Johnny right for the insufferable way Johnny had been bossing everybody. Johnny held hard feelings for Dove, refusing to forgive him. Not only was Johnny Tremain full of pride, but he also was unforgiving. So how did Johnny turn from prideful and unforgiving to the complete opposite: humble and forgiving? After the accident, because he was no longer able to work as a silversmith, he began searching for a new practice, and new life. In his search, he not only found what he was seeking, but also a new friend: Rab. Johnny was expansive, easily influenced.
