Health Information Exchange Systems NaQuita Carter DeVry University Professor Hamilton 3-11-2014 Electronic health information exchange (HIE) allows doctors, nurses, pharmacists, other health care providers and patients to appropriately access and securely share a patient’s vital medical information electronically—improving the speed, quality, safety and cost of patient care. There are three key forms of health information exchange: directed exchange, query-based exchange, and consumer mediated exchange (HealthIT.gov). Some benefits of this HIE are patients are able to provide other providers with their health information, able to identify and correct wrong or missing health information, identify and correct incorrect billing information, and tracking and monitor their own health (HealthIT.gov). The state of Illinois offers four HIE systems: 1) ILHIE connect 2) ILHIE Direct 3) Integrated Direct 4) Public Health Reporting (2.illinios.gov).
