Caroline Chisholm knew well before publishing the pamphlets about the troubles and dangers of living in Australia but she carefully omitted them from the pamphlets. Hundreds of letters were received by Caroline requesting the desire to immigrate to Australia. She continued to preach the beauties and fantastic opportunities that lie waiting in Australia. Caroline Chisholm believed that women were the key to success for civilising Australia. Through the civilising effect of marriage and family, she believed it would improve and refine society.
When whites were asked if they believed if “Sex with a person other than their spouse” was wrong, 76.3% of them said it was “always wrong.” Comparative, when blacks were asked the same question, 73.6% of them said it was “always wrong.” 76.2% of the “other” race respondents responded that they, too, also believed sex with a person other than their spouse was always wrong. When comparing variables: EVSTRAY AND RELITEN, many conclusions arise. The contingency coefficient is: .185. This indicates a moderate, positive relationship between the variables. This indicates that while strength of religious affiliation does have an effect on whether or not one has had sex with someone other than their spouse while married, there are many other variables
Marriage solely being between a man and a women is something we have had for centuries, however, due to divorces and newer ways to have a family, our prestigious and “honorable estate” (Bennett 34) of marriage is weakened. By lumping gay marriage with traditional marriage, Bennett believes that the definition of marriage would be further weakened. If we legally allow this union to be a part of marriage, then how could we stop a less legitimate union, like incest or bigamy? Excluding marriage between a man and a woman is not discriminatory towards homosexuals, but it is protective towards our institution of
(Jordan). This means that the people of the United States have the right to own firearms and that this right shall not be taken away. We must defend our right to bear arms, or we will go defenseless. Those who support gun control say that taking guns away from the public will lower crime rates. In 1996 Australia past laws banning most guns and made it a crime to use a gun in self-defense. After those laws were passed the number of armed robberies rose by 51%, unarmed robberies rose by 37%, assaults rose by 24%, kidnapping rose by 43%, murders may have fallen by 3%, but manslaughter rose by 16% (“Section 7: Three Common Gun Control Myths”).
‘South Australia became the first colony in Australia, and one of the first places in the world, to grant women the right to vote. South Australian women also win the right to stand for election to parliament, a world first. In 1902, after Federation of the colonies, women over the age of 21 years won the right to vote in Australia's national elections’. (Unknown, Exploring Democracy, 1895)However this only meant white women, the indigenous Australian population were not allowed until 1967. Before then Aboriginal people in Australia were considered to be a part of the native fauna and flora (plants and animals) up until 1967, when a referendum was held as to whether they should have the same basic human right to be officially recognised and counted as Australian
When Australia started to become its own country in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s it is said that many immigrants were treated poorly or with disrespect. It is incorrect to say that indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islanders received an equal choice between 1788 and the early 20th Century, although there were a few sincere attempts to assist them, these attempts would be considered unfair if it were in the 21st century. Afghans, Japanese Chinese and Pacific Islanders were all treated differently and it is not fair to state whether they had a fair go or not. Many people tried to help these races but sometimes it wasn’t quite enough. European immigrants got a fair go compared to the other immigrants but it is hard to say whether the
Since both of those movements only took a good hundred years to happen, how long will it be before the United States accepts gays? Gays have rights, and are not faced with the same challenges women and blacks were, but they are not being treated as equals. Homophobia is a widely unrecognized social injustice in today’s society. Homophobia should be considered as one of the if not the greatest social injustice in our society. In many parts of the world, homophobia can lead to several horrific events.
Many of their constitutional rights have been denied do to the fact of their sexual orientation. They have been treated like second class citizens as if they are invisible. The constitution sates that all American citizens are to be treated equally and with the same rights. So why are gays outcast by so many including most states and our government? There no different than your neighbors next door.
Violent, preventable crimes by minors have long plagued America’s larger cities but have scarcely been punished because of the age of the perpetrators. Protected by a lenient and highly outdated juvenile justice system, violent youth have taken advantage of such benefits and have run rampant in our cities. High profile slayings are quite the norm on the evening news, and every once in a while, disaster strikes and we lose a large number of lives at the hands of young offenders. And sadly, naive America continues to lose more and more lives at the hands of reckless teens and repeat offenders because we choose to give them as many chances as they need so long as they are not legal adults. Unfortunately, we have to lose and destroy more lives because we refuse to
Everyone should be treated the same whether or not they are homosexual or heterosexual.” Pondering her answer makes it clear that not everyone is equal. The United States is about being equal no matter whether someone, as an American citizen, male or female, black or white, or even have disabilities. Yet, what the United States did not realize is that the judgment it held against homosexuals would come, in a sense, to bite them in the butt. Equality is about putting everyone on the same playing field. As of today, interracial marriages are equal to same race marriages thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Loving in the case Loving v. Virginia, 388 U.S (1967), interracial couples are able to marry.
