How would you feel if you didn’t have the same rights as everyone else in the world? Is it really acceptable to discriminate against people just because they are attracted to the same sex? Why shouldn’t everyone have the right to marry whoever they like, regardless of their sex? In the last century whites were commonly considered to be superior to blacks. Even though interracial marriages have never been illegal in Australia, there was a very high chance that the children of the couple would be taken away. In many parts of the USA these marriages were illegal and interracial relationships resulted in violence and persecution. We are now a more civilized society, and we can look back and see the irrationality of this racial discrimination.…show more content…
Same-sex marriages are already recognised or legal in Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain and Sweden. This is 10 nations that have legalised same-sex marriage. This makes it apparent that if many countries have passed the law, then why can’t Australia follow and give equal rights to everyone? Australians have historically prided themselves on being socially progressive, accepting and equal. [Remember Australia was the second country to give women the vote.] Australia should follow the lead of these pioneering nations who have already legalised or recognised gay marriages. An example of how everyone is not equal would be the story of Olivia and Danny. They tied the knot in Sydney’s Hyde Park, a normal wedding ceremony with all their family and friends. They had a very typical relationship and wedding. The only difference is that Olivia and Danny are both women, which means even though their marriage was celebrated by their family and friends, it is not recognised as such by the Australian government. This is the important thing, that the Australian government does not recognise same-sex marriages as ‘official’, which is completely unfair when they share the same relationship as a man and
