I believe that presidential elections should be decided by the people and the popular vote. There have been four instances in our history when the winner of the popular vote did not become the president because the Electoral College voted for the other candidate (O’Connor & Sabato, 2009, p. 476). I believe that the average American is intelligent enough to vote for the candidate that they believe in. The Electoral College should either be done away with, or at a minimum every state should be mandated to award their electors to the winner of the popular vote within the state. Presidential campaigns today are conducted based on the Electoral College vote. The candidates will campaign in those states that have high electoral votes, and ones that lean their way, and then will look at those states that they may be able to turn into their corner. Campaigns are not conducted to gain the popular vote; rather they are based on those states that may get them the electoral votes necessary to win the election. I personally do not want to hear all of that crap. I do believe that news organizations delve too much in the sensational news today. They delve way too much into a person’s personal life. For example during the 2008 presidential election mainstream commentators, and anchors were questioning whether Sarah Palin was a good mother because she was running for vice president and trying to manage and raise a family ((O’Connor & Sabato, 2009, p. 531). How does this speculation have anything to do with her running for higher elected office. She was already a state governor so I would think that she was already handling those
