Aretha Hughes June 2, 2011 After 28 years, the Chicago Gun Ban has finally ended and due to recent studies, the gun violence rate has increased. Now, the Chicago residents are mainly affected by it. On the weekend of June 25, 2010, 52 people were shot and 10 were killed. Police blamed the shootings on gangs for most of the widespread incidents. There is more gun violence that occurs over the weekends and in the summertime than any other day or season, and they are mostly gang-related. Residents in Chicago fear for their lives and their children’s lives. There is no place that is considered a safe place now. Being a resident in the Chicago Pullman neighborhood is terrifying because of the gun violence. There are a lot of shootings that happen in my neighborhood that go unsolved; majority of them don’t even make the News. This is a horrible way to live especially when the Police are supposed to serve and protect. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people. Guns are a tool that helps people kill or injure someone else. Studies done by the National Commission on the causes and prevention of violence reported that victims are about five times more likely to survive if they were attacked by a knife than a gun (The Huffington Post). Making it legal for everyone to have the ability to own a gun puts us all in danger. Not only will people not make the right choices, but gun owners will turn to the gun as the solution to their problems. Being a witness to gun violence, I can honestly say finding a solution to completely stop the death rates from increasing due to firearms, is impossible. It does not matter how many police officers are stationed in the neighborhood, how hard you try to influence people to put the guns away, or how much the death rate is increasing, firearm owners with their mind set to kill, will eventually
