Throughout history, literature has served as a way for people to depict the problems that were occurring in their society. During the middle ages, the church was a unifying institution. After, the bubonic plague people began to question their religion and as a result they lost their moral values, many of them were members of the church. The lost of moral values led to the corruption of church officials. Chaucer demonstrates the corruption of the church and society in the wife of baths tale of the knight and the prolog of pardoner and friar. In the wife of baths tale, Chaucer reveals the corruption of the knight. In the prolog the knight is described to have the moral values of being noble, gentle and generous. He is also seen to live his life according to the code of chivalry in which emphasized bravery, military skill, generosity in victory, piety, and courtesy to women. However, in the wife of bath tales the knight go against the code and moral values he abuses a young girl in a river. Instead of protecting people from harm and acting courtesy to women, the knight himself inflicted harm towards an innocent young lady. Through the deed that knight commits in the wife of bath tale, Chaucer demonstrates his lost of moral values and the corruption of the people during the middle ages. In the pardoner’s prolog, Chaucer depicts how church officials were corrupted and had no moral values during the medieval times. In the prolog his is described as being a deceitful, manipulative, and a persuasive who preaches against sin and avarice by quoting that greed is the root of evil, when in reality he admits his greed and sin when he admits proudly in his ability of selling these relics, in which are usually remains of his meal to make a living.
