Holiday Homework: Task Three – Essay on Biodiversity In the article ‘Taking Stock’, presented in by Professor Chris Lee, at the International Biodiversity Conference 2010 in Nagoya, Japan, and held from the 25-27 of October. In this speech we see the speaker asking us if we have done enough to be able to celebrate life on earth. The speaker’s contention throughout his speech is: ‘that not enough has been done to help our planet’. Throughout this speech there are many persuasive language techniques used to help back up his contention. The tone of the speech he has used also has helped him persuade the reader, into thinking that they have a big role in the health of our planet. The tone which this speech is written in is anxiety and disappointment. One persuasive technique that was used in the speech was facts/statistics/evidence. You see this technique when the Chris says “we have lost 35% of mangroves, 40% of forests and 50% of wetlands.” He also goes on to say that “due to our own thoughtless actions, species are being lost at a rate that is estimated to be up to 100 times the natural rate of extinction.” This technique informs us that due to our inactions our planet, is suffering by losing a great amount of its natural beauty. The techniques used by Mr Lee are very effective because it once again links to his contention and on top of that outlines the great loss of natural landscape and animal life this past year. The persuasive technique inclusive language, as well as emotional language was also used in this speech. This is evident we the speech says “we know this. We are, in truth, the most educated generation of any date. We have no excuse for inaction.” This inclusive language tells the reader that they can’t just point the blame at others, we are all at fault, and we can all make a difference.
