The Arts and Craft Movement started in the late 1850s in England. It was inspired by the writings of John Ruskin and William Morris who then put Ruskin’s theories into pratice. The movement’s aim was to bring about social reform against the mass production of products during the industrial era. They also sort to create a link between arts and crafts. The Arts and Crafts Movement was brought to America “following the lead of English authors and theorists such as John Ruskin and William Morris, practitioners of the arts and crafts reform movement in America sought a return to the ideal conditions of pre-industrial life”( The Arts and Crafts Movement, 1870-1920 [sa]). Thus the colours are a yellowish brown with a stronger dark brown. With the bronze hinges and locks standing out from the more natural wood. It gives the shelf a more natural feel and look. The bronze used gives the bookcase richer look and feel. This natural look is in reference to the movements belief in the use of natural material and handmade (carving) products. The use of bronze hinges and locks used on the wood have a rustic look to them. The use of rustic elements is a characteristic of the movement. Tone is warm, its created by the use of natural oak. The oak been from a lighter brown oak timber. This warmth of the bookcase will warm a room, creating a natural feel and atmosphere. The warm tones link back to the movement belief in nature in design and rustic style. The texture is smooth expect on the edges and doors where the carvings are protruding giving a rough feel. It creates flat work on surfaces and the carvings create style and gothic reference. I think it links to the designers individual crafting methods showing off this skills, in different methods of crafting.
