Abstract The objective of the south street seaweed experiment is to make a tincture of iodine. Iodine is used commercially as an antiseptic on cuts and scrapes of the skin. Conceptually, one of the active ingredients of the tincture, iodide, can be extracted from seaweed. By adding the seaweed to water and applying heat energy into the mixture, we were able to extract iodide. After adding Iodine salts, and filtering the mixture our next goal was to test for three important chemicals that must exist in our mixture for it to be a true iodine tincture; Iodine, Iodide Ion and the triiodide ion.
The number of swimming brine shrimp for Trial 4 was slightly less than that of Trial 1. This could be due to oxygen levels in the lab, or it could be due to human error in counting the numbers of eggs from the procedure, or counting the numbers of swimming brine shrimp and dead brine shrimp in analysis. Additionally, actual amounts of ethanol concentrations could have slightly varied due to human error in measuring the ethanol consistently among groups causing slightly variable viability rates. Water may also have splashed out of the dishes, contributing to a flaw in measurement. In the future, the entire study should be performed by individual groups in order to aid elimination of error.
Course # Student name / Names of members of group Date: Exp # : Estimating the effects of acid rain Introduction: Precipitation that measures a pH value below 5.6 is generally considered as acid rain. Burning fossil fuels is the main reason for the elevated levels of gaseous oxides in a polluted atmosphere that in-turn forms acid rain. Gaseous oxides such as that of carbon, sulfur, nitrogen and phosphorus could dissolve in water to form an acidic solution. A generalized reaction sequence on the formation of acid rain is as follows; One of the determinants of clean water in the natural environment is its alkalinity. Alkalinity can be defined as the capacity to neutralize acids.
It is important to research on ways of controlling draught and limiting algae growth because it will mitigate further expansion of the Gulf of Dead Zone. References Bruckner, M. (2012). Ryan Agro Acid Rain Lab Purpose: I.V: Type of Stone D.V: Mass of rock after 5 days Control: Stone in Water Problem Statement: Acid rain causes some stones to loose mass. Which type of Stone is the best to prevent a loss in mass? Hypothesis: If the material used is affected by acid rain, then it will lose mass when exposed o vinegar, because of chemical changes. Procedure: 1. Gather Materials(container with lid, graduated cylinder, vinegar, balance, limestone, marble, red sandstone, granite) 2.

Why are some organisms unable to grow in potassium cyanide (KCN) broth?if it is sensitive to cyanide, it will be unable to grow in KCN broth * * The ducitol fermentation test is positive when the media changes to a yellow color.
Recognized by many as the “smeltdown in the Delta,” the extinction trajectory of delta smelt, has left the once-abundant species in critical condition due to record-high water diversions, pollutants, and harmful nonnative species that thrive in the damaged delta habitat. The delta smelt is semelparous, living one year and dying after its first spawning. Delta smelt spawning occurs in spring in river channels and tidally influenced backwater sloughs upstream of the mixing zone where saltwater meets freshwater. This shift in the species center of abundance arises from the fact that while the delta smelt is a saltwater tolerant species, it is seldom found where sea
The Colorado River Austin Norris The Colorado River is a primary water resource for seven states, and Mexico. It provides water for 38 million people and runs for 1,450 miles, traveling from the Rocky Mountains through parts of the southwest before heading south to Mexico where it ends in the Gulf of California. For years people have relied upon the waters of the Colorado River for agriculture and life. Increased population growth and demands in recent years have threatened the river. Unexpected draughts have reduced the volume of annual water flow and stream flow miscalculations resulted in more water being allocated for use than actually flows through the river.
Proper disposal methods should be effected to ensure the water aquifers around do not get contaminated. 5. After analyzing the arguments for and against fracking, state your position about whether people’s concerns are warranted. Absolutely people’s concerns are warranted, these chemicals in our water supply have cancer causing agents that hinder health. References Else, H. (2012).
Lack bed space, most non-Mexican illegal immigrants apprehended are released and directed to return for a court appearance. However, 75 percent fail to show. Last year, only 30,000 of the 160,000 non-Mexicans caught coming across our Southwest border were sent home. Addressing this problem, the President has signed legislation increasing the number of beds in detention facilities by more than 10 percent over the next year. IV.
