In the end realizing their greatest flaw was seeking refuge in the American dream which was the cause of their downfall. One of Gatsby’s and Willy Lomans greatest flaws that lead to their downfall is the way these characters portray their image and wealth toward others. Gatsby’s disposition to have extravagant parties regardless of the fact that he knows no one, just to be known as rich, is a clear exemplar of trying to obtain a popular reputation for himself “Do you know him?” “He’s just a man named Gatsby.” (Fitzgerald37) This enumerates the fact that even in the eyes to his quests Gatsby wasn’t of any
Tom and Daisy the two people that stood very low in his eyes now. Daisy is Nick’s cousin a young lady who ditched Gatsby and married Tom, just because Gatsby was poor. When Gatsby came into Daisy’s life again she pretended to like him but at the end once again the result was fleeing away without saying anything. “But she and Tom had gone away early this afternoon and taken baggage with them.” (Pg-164) Daisy and Tom left the day of Gatsby’s funeral, it’s very obvious that they knew Gatsby was dead because he was so famous and this news was in newspapers as well, but they still didn’t ever bother to come see him. Hence they were cruel and selfish that’s why Nick refused to shake hands with Tom when they met again.
size does not fit all: Biff Loman and The American Dream The traditional American Dream glorifies wealth and success, often at the expense of individuality and self-expression. Arthur Miller’s play, Death of a Salesman, explores this dangerous concept of a cookie cutter dream. The protagonist, Willy Loman, has a dream that he idolizes. This dream involves being well liked, popular, attractive, and rich. These attributes are seen as the keys to happiness and bypassing hard work.
To be an American means many things to me. To be an American means that you are a part of one of the greatest countries in the whole world. To be an American means that you have freedom, to do pretty much what you want, and to say what you want. It means that you have equality, because everyone is given an equal chance in America. It means that you right to go out and chase your dreams, and strive for your goals.
The fact that Gatsby was incapable to keep grasp of Daisy five years in the past would only foreshadow the quick relationship he would acquire towards the end of the novel. The dream of reaching Daisy demonstrates another dead end to fulfilling the American Dream. After being deployed into the army, Gatsby lost Daisy to Tom Buchannan which would have originally been the end of his dream. In the attempt to replay the past and win her back, Daisy “vanished into her rich house, into her rich, full of life, leaving Gatsby – Nothing” (156-157). As Daisy chooses to leave Gatsby, his dream would follow Daisy leaving him with nothing.
The American Dream all the characters are chasing is ruined by reality of life. Gatsby dream involves him falling in love with Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby feared that Daisy did not wait for him because he was not rich. That’s why Gatsby did crime to get rich. Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan.
The American Dream America is where the American dream can be achieved. As long as you work hard it will be achieved. As long as your work hard it will pay off in the end. So many people are in search of the American Dream and it is extremely possible to achieve that goal with a little determination. America still provides access to the American Dream, to the “tired, poor, and the huddled masses.” I believe that it is possible for anyone to achieve the American dream.
However a very accurate examination of the “American Dream” for me can be perfectly described in the article “Conceptions of The American Dream” which has an excerpt of James Truslow Adams’ novel The Epic of America where he states that the “American Dream” is: "That dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement…A dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position.” In other words, a land that portrays everyone regardless of their birth, achieving what their are able to do. A land where everybody is treated and seen as equals and are recognized by others for what they are despite their position in
The American Dream We as American’s have the right afforded to us through the perseverance of our fore fathers to pursue the American Dream. In my opinion the American Dream is the right to choose. Choose anything and everything that has to do with me. I take for granted that I will be treated equally and fairly no matter my choices in life. Whether I was born on this soil or migrated here I have the right to the pursuit of happiness.
People assume that success, comfort, happiness, wealth and the wish to succeed is the American dream but when it was first created it was meant to be that “all men are created equal and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights including Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” as stated in the constitution . The American Dream is about leaving behind whatever you were or weren't in your home country. None of that matters in the United States. What matters are your ambition, talent, and hard work, and rights as a living person. People of very humble beginnings who wouldn't have had a chance anywhere else became successful here.
