Speech 104 Persuasive Speech Opponent Raising the Minimum Wages Introduction I. Attention Garber: Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can use to change the world.” II. Topic: Raising the minimum wages, good intention bad result. III. Importance: Why raising the minimum wages is a bad proposal, because it doesn’t fix the problem of poverty. IV. Thesis. Congress should not raise the minimum wage. V. Preview. Tell the audience, why the advocate proposal will not solve the issue of poverty, as a better solution is to fix our educational system, as well as the advantages of a better education for all student will not lead them to poverty. Body I. Rebuttal: Advocate stated that raising the minimum wages will reduce poverty, yet it will not help stop poverty but simply pass it on to future generation. a. The current minimum wages is at $ 7.25 increasing to $10.10 per hour. 1. In five years from it possible to be $ 10.10 to $15 per hour. 2. By 2025 it’s going to be $15 to $20 per hour. b. Similar to our National Debt of 17 trillion dollars, rather solving the debt gradually over the years. It’s being pass to future generation’s problems. II. Counter Proposal: A better solution is to be more aggressive to fix our educational system. a. According to America’s Promise Alliance and the U.S Department of Education, “The current national high school graduate rate is 80 percent. In 2013, about one in five student did not graduate high school…” b. Need to prevent high school dropout. c. Stop teen pregnancy. d. High school dropout makes about $ 17,000 not enough to support a family of 2 or more. III. Advantages: a. If less student dropout from school and manage to graduate they will make more money to get out of poverty. b. Also, the more high school graduates less the poverty greater the economy. Conclusion I.
