DIANA CUETO ENC 1101 PROFESSOR BRAND 12 OCTOBER 2014 Escaping Reality The alarm clock rings at seven thirty in the morning followed by a hot shower and fresh coffee. The car engine turns on and I head to my destination. After a four hour school day, I change into either my gym or work clothes. In between the day my attention is put into projects and homework until my body muscles do not wish to be awake, and in the blink of an eye is seven thirty in the morning once again. Over time this becomes a routine forcing my soul to scream in desperation for air. I tend to close my eyes and day dream about a quiet and peaceful river with beautiful birds flying around me. As a child my father would take the family on road trips around Colombia excluding Cano Cristales, a paradise inside a natural park in the state of Meta, because it was part of the “red zone” where the guerrilla took over. Spending nine years of my life in a town where people vacation becomes suffocating. Life seems surreal with fake smiles and repetitive conversations. To escape dissatisfaction in my everyday routine, I long for a place isolated from a tumult of people. A small group plus a guide who loves his job and is not forced to be there will be the only companion on this dream trip where vehicles cannot access the national park and only a few people know of its beauty. My dream vacation in Cano Cristales is highlighted by a beautiful river many call the river of seven colors. Atlasobscura.com says, “An explosion of natural color known as the river that ran away from paradise.” They also describe that, “During the short span between the wet and dry seasons, when the water level is just right, a unique species of plant that lines the river floor called Marenia clavigera turns the river in to a brilliant red.
