He uses the time off to go home. There, he finds out that his mother has cancer and that the civilians in the town are slowly starving from lack of food that the war has consumed. As the time for Paul to leave is getting closer the mood at home becomes gloomier. Paul's mother becomes unhappy about him going back to the war. Prior to Paul's leave, he visits Kemmeriche's family to deliver sad news about his close friends death.
Though, the story’s ending is ironic due to the sniper recognizing that the enemy killed was his brother. The greater irony is that all the sniper’s enemies of the Free State happen to be his brothers, for they were all once together as one army. He starts talking about the flowers and how beautiful they are, and this makes Elisa feel beautiful and valued. A stranger is noticing her “place”, her hard work. In his preface to the novel, Remarque maintains that "a generation of men ... were destroyed by the war" (Remarque, All Quiet Preface). Baumer's closest comrades fall one after the other. The conditions in the German army are to harsh, they have no food, ammunition, moral is low they could not keep fighting. An important episode in the novel is when Baumer is issued a period of leave when he visits his home town. This leave is disastrous for Baumer because he realizes that he can not communicate with the people on the home front because of his military experiences and their limited, or nonexistent, understanding of the war.

Once Gregor comes out from hiding he is giving not the warmest welcoming from his family. His sister runs away, his mother faints, from the very look at him, and him father pelts him with apples causing him unconscious. Gregor is neglected and unwanted, whenever someone tries to help him, causes a family fight. Feeling like an insect Gregor is alienated from life at home, a place where the last thing he should feel is isolation. When the family’s tenants see Gregor, they declare that they will not be paying for the time they were living in the apartment.
The police arrive at Harold's home to deliver the sad news to his mother. After telling her, his mother collapses with outstretched arms creating a dramatic scene, not knowing that Harold is actually home and can see. Harold knows that his mother does not really care about him, but she was just acting as though his death was important. From that moment, Harold decides to "...[enjoy] being dead". Maude teaches Harold to not let anything get in the way of his goals.
Conrad returns home from a successful day back and school eager to share with his mother and shuts him out leaving him feeling lost. The song further helps the reader feel Beth's coldness toward her son. The song continues, saying, "you put up walls and paint them all a shade of gray"(Swift 10).
