Era of Good Feelings The US has not always been a place of such vast inventions and accessibility. We had to start somewhere and someone had to think of the improvements to our country that we never even think of. The time period 1814-1860 can be termed an Era of Good Feelings socially and economically but not as much politically as there were underlying tones of sectionalism that will ultimately lead to a divide in the United States. This was a time when thoughts of an easier life sparked in the minds of Americans and led them to invent things to increase productivity and to change society as a whole. There were many social changes during the "Era of Good Feelings." One of the many changes was abolition was introduced into society. For the first time in US history people were openly speaking out against slavery. White and black people wrote petitions, newspapers, created societies and even government officials made statements to try to end slavery. Another change was that public education was seen as a necessity in the US. A man named Horace Mann or the "Father of Education" thought that only through education could the US become a more equal place. So Massachusetts began public schools and over the next few years every state offered public education. Then there were women’s rights. One of the most important of all social changes was The Second Great Awakening. The era of good feelings wasn't just about social change but economic change too. The north was rapidly changing with the inventions of "iron horses" and steamboats and roads. The "iron horse" was the original name for trains in the US. They were called this because they moved as fast as a horse but they were more efficient because these "iron horses" didn't need rest which took a lot of time off travel. Steamboats allowed transport across water between states. Steamboats made it easier to go upstream
