UNIT 3 Understand the importance of diversity, equality and inclusion 1. Explain what is meant by:- Diversity:- Diversity is the understanding of different cultures and how these cultures impact on how, when and why people seek medical care. Individuality should be taken into account and people have different needs and wants and we need to meet these people where they are in their life and situation. Each persons situation is different and it is respecting these differences and not offering favourable treatment to certain groups of people at the expense of those they hold prejudice against. Equality:- Equality is treating everyone equal regardless of their, colour, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation or disability.
Giving a good duty of care is getting to understand different lifestyles and cultures respecting the individuality and diversity of the people who enter the hospital. Not discriminating against people because they have different ways of life or have different beliefs. Ensure that your behaviour, words and actions and those of people working in your area support a commitment to equality of opportunity, diversity and inclusion. It is important that I know my personal responsibilities and liabilities under the equality legislation and any relevant codes of practice. Also to be aware of the diversity and needs of your patients and identify areas where needs could be better satisfied and where the diversity of patients could be improved.
The human rights act promotes anti-discriminatory practice by making sure that everyone has the right to be treated equally with dignity and respect. Everybody has the right to have access to public services and the right to be treated fairly. According to www.direct.gov.uk The Human Rights Act 1998 includes: right to life, right to liberty and security, no punishment without law, right to marry, freedom of expression, right to education, protection of property, right to participate in free elections, freedom of assembly and association, freedom of thought, belief and religion. Human Right Act 1998 has ensured that everyone has rights which protect them from harm and abuse. These rights allow individuals to achieve their potential and access the same opportunities as others.
Not only is the setting free of discrimination but equality and fair treatment to everyone is promoted. It is very important within health and social care because the service users will often be vulnerable meaning they are more likely to be a victim of discrimination and affect them a lot worse in comparison to those who are not vulnerable. Not only is it their vulnerability that puts them at more risk of harm and abuse but also because they are putting their lives and care in the hands of others and are trusting them to provide a good standard of service to help them. This is about making your care setting completely equal and giving everyone fair treatment. It includes making sure discrimination doesn’t happen but also promoting anti-discrimination.
If person centre values that underpin all work in the health and social care sector are followed as they should be then all individuals should feel that and health workers ensure that : Person centred values are guides on how individuals are treated. The individual is treated has an individual, the individual is supported to exercise choice, supporting individuals to maintain emotional control and supporting individuals with sensitive situations, make sure individual's rights is maintained, support the individual to be as independent as possible, treat all individuals with dignity and respect, the individual is supported in accessing their rights, ensure the individual have privacy if they want it. • Evaluate the use of care plans in applying person centred values. Care plans are the basis for how care and support services are delivered. The most important part of the plan is the outcome that the individual wants to achieve; the whole of the plan is geared to making progress towards these outcomes.
Champion Equality Diversity & Inclusion 1 1. Explain models of practice that underpin equality, diversity and inclusion in own area of responsibility Equality and inclusion are moral and legal obligations. As staff within this sector I have a role to ensure that in all aspects of my work everyone is given opportunities to thrive and to prevent any barriers that may stop them from reaching their full potential. Equality does not mean everyone should be treated the same. People have different needs and ambitions thus everyone should simply put have equality of opportunity.
The meaning of the word equality is that all individuals have the same value but it still doesn't mean that they all should be treated in the same way. In the health and social care settings equity is about to ensure that all individuals have fair and equal accesses to services like doctors, medication and also treatment, it also means that the needs from service users should be treated in a fair way and receive equal treatment form the doctors, medication and services. Next in the topic is DIVERSITY The concept of diversity is to accept and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along
