Anthem In the novella Anthem by Ayn Rand people may look at Equality 7-2521 as a sinner. Especially with the choices he made that included rebelling against the usual lifestyle and how people are supposed to live. “I worship individuals for their highest possibilities as individuals, and loathe humanity, for its failure to live up to these possibilities” (Rand). Equality 7-2521 made his own choices that were forbidden by the council but it made his life better. Therefore, the choices he made were sins to the other people, but to him they were not. The type of world that they live in is know as the world of “we.” “They existed only to serve the state. They were conceived in controlled Palaces of Mating. They died in the home of the Useless. From cradle to grave, the crowd was one-great WE” (Rand). Because of this situation Equality had trouble fitting in because he was unusually better than anyone else. After living through these troubles he finally got placed into “The Home of the Street Sweepers” for his profession, as punishment. During this job he and International 4-8818 discovered a secret tunnel. They assumed it was forbidden because the men of the unmentionable time period but that intrigued Equality even more. He spent time alone, performed experiments, fell in love and than ran away. His life couldn’t be better now. Equality discovered the meaning of he, she, him, her, my, mine and most importantly I by reading all of the different books that were left in the house that was created during the Unmentionable times. Equality’s choice of being a “sinner” was the best thing to ever happen. Even though overall the choices were not sins.
