Environmental Psychology Paper Kris Patch PSY/460 September 26, 2011 Jennifer McBlaine Phd Environmental Psychology Paper What is environmental psychology? In this field of psychology environment is used broadly. Environment can be defined as natural environments, social environments, learning environments and even informal environments. There is so much within the definition of environment; we could be talking about the city, the country or even a culture. Environment in psychology is narrowed down to a person in their environment and what their behaviors might be. Understanding the behavior of humans has to come with understanding the environment that they live in or come from. “People tend to seek out places where they feel competent and confident, places where they can make sense of the environment while also being engaged with it. Research has expanded the notion of preference to include coherence (a sense that things in the environment hang together) and legibility (the inference that one can explore an environment without becoming lost) as contributors to environmental comprehension (Young, 1999).” We have all heard of environmental preservation, but understanding the field of environmental psychology relates to so much more than just keeping the grass green. Environmental psychology studies how humans relate to one another as well as their surroundings, so it can refer to man-made environments as well as the natural environments (Stewart, 2007). Environmental psychologists have been doing studies to figure out what makes a human comfortable. Environmental psychologists have also tried to figure out how a person can adjust their surroundings to help in stress reduction and enhance the quality of life. Psychologists believe that the unspoiled nature can help in stress reduction; humans tend to react to the environment around them unconsciously.
