Population Growth Whether we like to admit it or not, our very own rapidly multiplying presence on this planet is the biggest environmental health issue affecting the world and it’s getting bigger by the minute. We voraciously consume resources, pollute the air and water, tear down natural habitats, introduce species into areas where they don’t belong and destroy ecosystems to the point of causing millions of species to become endangered and, all too often, go extinct. Air Pollution The human health effects of poor air quality are far reaching, but principally affect the body's respiratory system and the cardiovascular system. Individual reactions to air pollutants depend on the type of pollutant a person is exposed to, the degree of exposure, the individual's health status and genetics. Water Pollution Contamination or pollution of water affects global health in many ways. For example ingestion of poorly treated water can cause Diarrhoea, Cholera, Stomach infections and Typhoid. Polluted water is a preferred breeding ground for mosquitoes and other pests. Mosquito bites adversely affect human health and can cause diseases such as malaria, filariasis, and dengue. Water pollution also affects the health of water animals such as fish. When humans consume these sick fish, the infections are passed and can take more serious form in the human body.
