Social Issues and Technological Changes Tracy Isbell Soc100 September 14, 2011 Art Fuller Social Issues and Technological Changes The world is changing at an alarming rate. Most of these changes are taking place as the result of the technological advances in our society today. We now have the ability to speak with a person in seconds no matter where they are located. In order to understand just how far we have come in this technology we need to look at ways we communicated in the past. On April 3, 1860 the first officially Pony Express opened. The Pony Express was a consisted of relays of men riding horses carrying saddlebags of mail across a 2000 mile trail. It would take up to 11 days for the mail to reach distant ion. The Pony Express only last 19 months, due to on October 24, 1861 the completion of the Pacific Telegraph. The telegraph was a communication system that transmitted electric signals over wires from location to location (about.com). In the 1870’s, two inventors by the names of Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray were both working independently on a piece of equipment that could transmit speech electrically. Bell was working on a way to improve the telegraph system. At this time the telegraph was using it dot-and dash, Morse Code, and it was limited to send or receive only one message at a time. While working to improve the telegraph, Bell discovered away to transmit sounds. With this the telephone was born. On March 10, 1876 the first words were spoken through the telephone (About.com inventors).
