Marschke April 21, 2012 Entrepreneurial Leadership Avon vs. Amway Executive Summary Entrepreneurial leaders are person who organizes and manages a business undertaking, and assuming the risk for the sake of profit or non- profit. Starting with nothing more than an idea or prototype, entrepreneurs have the ability to take a business to the point at which it can sustain itself an internally generated cash flow (Yukl, 2006). Generally speaking, entrepreneurs need the freedom to operate without much supervision. They also need clear definitions of success and failure. According to Boone (2011) small businesses generate more than half of the nation’s gross domestic product which consists of companies with less than five hundred employees making huge contribution to United States economy. Although entrepreneurs usually start with small, local efforts, they often innovate solutions that can be replicated to spun new global industries (Zahra, Raw Houser & Newbaun, 2008). There are two types of entrepreneurs that will be discussed, profit oriented and non- profit business, both are managed in similar ways because they both need to make money to be able to achieve their mission statement. Two entrepreneurs that were researched are Avon as a profit entrepreneur and Amway a social entrepreneur. Profit Oriented Entrepreneurial Approaches of Avon David H McConnell was known as the traveling book salesman, who usually offer a perfume sample to his female clients , he realized that his female customers were far more interested in the free perfume samples he offered than in his books.
