Coach K’s actions are in line with a leader. Leaders are described as charismatic, admired and held in high esteem. They motivate and inspire and have a very passionate attitude about their vision and goals (Kotterman, 2006). An example of Coach K’s leadership ability is expressed in his coaching philosophy. He maintained a level of discretion, always remained flexible, adjustable, and dynamic (Snook et al, 2005a).
As a leader, Washington practiced the drive to go beyond status to serve and bring commitment to a cause. His internal motivation caused Washington to take responsibilities seriously and show optimism in the face of failure. This transposed into a moral leader of patriotism and honor. An example of his independent drive was recognized when titled as the commander in chief. Not the only one in consideration, he had many positive qualifications for the job including his serious political commitment to the position as he had a long list of leadership positions (Brookhiser 22).

Another topic that has received considerable attention inleadership and management discussions is motivation. The main reason of such popularity is a close connection between leadership and motivation. Motivation is a key component of leadership.
