ENRIQUE GRANADOS Pantaléon Enrique Costanzo Granados y Campiña or most people know him as Enrique Granados. Granados was born in Lerida, Catalonia on July 27th 1867. As a young adult he began learning and studying the piano in Barcelona with instructors such as Francisco Jurnet and Joan Baptista Pujol in Madrid. In 1887 he moved to Paris and studied under Charles-Wilfrid de Bériot and the famous Felipe Pedrell. While in Paris he had to attend De Beriot class at the conservatory with frequent intermissions due to the status of his health. While in Paris he created friendships with very important and famous French composers such as Faure, Debussy Ravel and Dukas, As well as a very close relationship with Camille Saint-Saëns. In 1889 he moved back to Barcelona and began his career as a performing virtuoso and a composer. He played his first concert at “Grieg’s Piano Concierto” in Spain. During this time he also did many chamber music concerts with other well known composers and his friends such as Pau Casals, Mathieu Crickboom, Jacques Thibaud, Emil von Sauer and Camille Saint-Saens. In 1898 his zarzuela “Maria Del Carmen” was performed in the royal theater in Madrid, which gained the attention of King Alfonso XIII. Also in 1898 because of “Maria Del Carmen” he was crowned a knight by King Carlos III. In 1911, after a rewrite because he was unsatisfied with its original form, “Goyescas” was suppose to be premiered at the Paris grand-opera for 1914-1915, but had to be given up due to the war. Goyescas was a piano suite named after scenes from the paintings and tapestries of Goya and episodes from the Goyesque period in Madrid, a time marked by bloodshed and political upheaval. Also in 1911 Granados opened up Granados Academy, a school where his piano teachings where taught. In Jan. 28 1916 it got its first premiere in New York at the Metropolitan opera
