In Beloved, I have found that Morrison plays with deferred meanings and ambiguities. As I have explored Sethe’s behaviour of committing infanticide, I found that where the critic who wrote that “Sethe ...makes us think again and again about what we mean when we say we love our children or our freedom”, I believe that Morrison wants the reader to take this as an adequate description of Sethe’s behaviour. This statement has indeed an ambiguous meaning making it challenging to conclude a certain reasoning for the act that Sethe has committed, however by exploring it further I have found that it stands to its be in favour of what Morrison is trying to illustrate to us throughout the novel in explaining this behaviour.

It is clear that Morrison felt that slavery denied black mothers the right to feel maternal love and eventually made them doubtful toward their own children. Throughout Beloved, Morrison also explores the psychology of motherhood when a slave mother and her children experience freedom. Sethe did not seem to have freedom to love and was only left with her children to love, and that she loves them so much that she wants to spare them from not being able to have a life of freedom.
