New Health Policy – Unani Medicine 1. Current Status Indian Scenario At present, there are 41 recognized colleges which provide education and training facilities in Unani system at undergraduate level. Of them, seven Unani colleges have postgraduate facilities. Besides, a National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM) at Bangalore (Karnataka) also offers postgraduate education in Unani Tib. The total admission capacity for undergraduate courses is 1851and for postgraduate course is 135, respectively. There are ten Government institutions, five grant-in-aid colleges, and 26 institutions set up by voluntary organizations. All these educational institutions are affiliated to different universities. The curriculum prescribed by the CCIM is followed in these institutions. Global Scenario Unani system is popular in different parts of the world with different names. In India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and South Africa it is known as Unani Medicine as it originated from Unan (Greece). In Iran it is called as Tibbe Sunnati (Traditional Medicine), in Pakistan Eastern Medicine, and in China Uyghur Medicine. In some countries it is also known as Islamic Medicine or Arabic Medicine. Status in Pakistan There are about 32 Unani colleges in Pakistan imparting four-year Diploma course “Fazile Tibbo Jarahat and five-year Degree course “Bachelor of Eastern Medicine and Surgery (BEMS). About 50,000 Unani practitioners are registered with National Council for Tibb, which is a regulatory body for Unani Medicine in Pakistan. There are about 500 dispensaries in private and government sector and about 100 Unani drug manufacturing units. Status in Bangladesh Bangladesh offers a five-year degree course in Unani Medicine recognized by University of Dhaka and other universities. The country has about 10 Unani Colleges and about 6000 registered practitioners. Status in Sri Lanka
