In recent years there has been an increased concern over the adequacy of educational facilities to create an environment that is conducive to learning. Many studies have investigated the influence of the built environment on undergraduate students; however, none have explicitly investigated the influence of the built environment on graduate student perceptions of their educational experience. Conclusions about the influence of the built environment on undergraduate students have previously been generalized to include graduate students, but graduate students typically have different educational motivations than undergraduates. This paper investigates the influence of the built environment on graduate students; a professional program in education offered in two locations that differed in the built environment was selected for analysis. This paper focused on the design aspects of the built environment, specifically lighting (functional), acoustics (functional), temperature (physical) and color (aesthetics). The literature review found that the built environment directly influences undergraduate student perceptions about their college experience. It also revealed that the influence of the built environment on graduate student perceptions of their graduate school experience had not been studied in depth.
