Historical context pertains to logos, which appeal to the reader’s common sense and beliefs. This tool is important because it brings the reader to feel confident that English has been, and will continue to be, spread across the world. The author states specific examples in history that have promoted language growth and links them to the same factors pertaining to English. Crystal makes his point that "A language has traditionally become an international language for one chief reason: the power of its people- especially their political and military power." (355).
To recognize the historical fact that the United Sates has been an overwhelmingly English speaking nation since it was created and that its constitution and foundational documents are in English. 5. When I came to know that I have been asked to take English remedial class, I was a bit mad at first, but then I thought that this class would make me better. I view remedial classes as practice, very much like professional athletes view training, because the best athletes practice to become better. As well, once students complete a degree with finishing the English remedial and begin seeking employment, they will find many companies emphasize good communication skills. So, It doesn’t matter if you know everything or nothing, what matters is that you benefit in every class (even if it’s a remedial). Soon, after my graduation I will be joining my dad’s business.

Ever since I took classes where I learned about various countries and their cultures, it has always been my dream to be bilingual. In so many places around the world, children begin to learn English at a very young age. This has always been very important because the United States is a very powerful independent country, unlike many of the smaller countries with failing economies. This brings me to one of Gonzales’s main points, that immigrants don’t want to come to the United States, but have to for a better life. She states that there are millions of dollars spent each year to provide translators and translations to non-English speakers that can be saved if they were required to learn English. Finding what is most helpful for meeting the goals set out in the standards may be difficult for a new teacher. Setting high standards and clear goals for students help set them up for their future, make them feel valued and have a goal to reach for. Close-Reading is a careful and purposeful way of reading that help the students to actually comprehend what they are reading and in turn makes reading more desirable. Additionally text-based evidence aides in the understanding and comprehension by providing students with well structured and purposeful text. There are so many times in my life I wish I could go back to my early education years and pay closer attention to what I was being taught.
